STEPS TO ENTER
​
1. Sign up

Create an account at artandwriting.org/login to submit your work to the 2019 Scholastic Awards. (You can also use the same login if you submitted previously, just update your profile to your current grade level)

2. Create and Upload Your Work
The Scholastic Awards look for work that demonstrates originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. After you have created your work, you can upload it to your Scholastic Awards Account. Once you have logged in, follow the instructions to upload all of your submissions into the system.

Every category has specific requirements so please read the Guidelines and Category Descriptions carefully. Note that you will need your educator's email address.

3. Send in the Required Forms
After uploading your work, print your submission forms and have a parent or guardian and an educator sign them. Submit the form(s) and fee(s) following the instructions on the Submission Form and the guidelines below. Please carefully read through the instructions as you go through the registration process.


4. Submission Fee
​The submission fees are $5 per individual submission and $20 per portfolio submission (for graduating seniors only - a series of 8 pieces with including an artist statement). 
  • NOTE: At the end of your registration, please select to print and mail your form and Foxcroft School will cover the submission fee for two individual entries per student and one portfolio per senior.

CATEGORIES
Photography
Description: Images captured by either an analog or digital camera.
Examples (including but not limited to)Black and white photographs, color photographs, digital or analog photographs, photograms, other experimental photography, etc.)

Special Instructions
  • Identify type of photographic techniques used in the “List Materials” section of online registration.
  • Editing software (Adobe Photoshop, Corel PaintShop Photo Pro, Photo Explosion, etc.) is acceptable to use for minor touch-ups and image correction in a manner that replicates traditional darkroom techniques (cropping, dodging, burning, adjusting brightness, contrast, color balance, etc.).
  • Works that are digitally collaged, cloned, layered, merged, distorted, or heavily manipulated with computer software must be submitted in the Digital Art category.
  • Each work submitted to the photography category should be a distinct image that presents a unique artistic vision.

Submitting multiple similar images from the same series of photographs is highly discouraged. Part of the submission process to the Awards is determining which image best fulfills the Scholastic Awards criteria: originality, technical skill, and emergence of a personal vision.

You can upload one image for each Photography submission.

Digital Art
Description: Computer-generated artwork OR artwork captured digitally and heavily collaged or manipulated to produce a new image.
The production of digital art relies heavily upon computer software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, GIMP, Macromedia Freehand, CorelDraw, or other graphics editing programs.  Examples (including but not limited to)Digital collages, photo manipulation, digital painting, and fractal art.

Special Instructions
  • Identify computer software used in the “List Materials” section of the online submission form.
  • Digital artwork may contain text, but submissions that contains text for commercial purposes should be entered in the Design category.
  • Digital photgraphs that are “touched up” or lightly manipulated using computer software should be entered in the Photography category.
  • Consider submitting to the Video Game Design category or Future New category if your work has a strong interactive element.
  • If you are using collaged images, please refer to the copyright and plagiarism guide.

You can upload one image for each Digital Art submission.

2018-2019 Competitions

The IT Girls - Syracuse University, New York (Overnight Retreat: October 6-7, 2019)
The It Girls Overnight Retreat began back in 2011 when the School of Information Studies (iSchool) wanted to build confidence, inspire and create a pathway for girls to study Information Technology as an academic discipline. An essential piece of the program involves creating meaningful connections between professional women, iSchool staff, faculty, current students and iSchool alumni who work in the IT industry. Participants meet like-minded driven students and build lifelong connections and friendships.

2018-2019 Competitions

Loudoun Arts Council Coloring Book: We Love Art

The Loudoun Arts Council invites artists to submit designs for inclusion in “We ❤️ Art” — a coloring book about the arts. This LAC publication will debut at the new Book and Arts Festival in Brambleton on June 8th, 2019. Each coloring page will also include information about the artist. The pages can be about art of any kind: visual, performing, literary, etc. Artists may submit more than one design, but LAC reserves the right to limit submissions so as many artists as possible can be included in the book.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY: Any artist working or living in Loudoun County.
SELECTION: Images should be camera-ready, measure 8.5” x 11” and rendered in black and white (Please note: Photos of pencil drawings do not reproduce well and will not be considered.) HINT: We encourage your creativity regarding subject matter and depiction, but to optimize your chances of being selected, we recommend your design keeps to a simple outline style, for easy filling-in by any age colorer. If you have questions about submissions, please contact us at info@loudounarts.org BEFORE the 4/15 deadline date and we will gladly assist you.
HOW TO APPLY: Submit your 8.5” x 11” design directly by e-mail to info@loudoudounarts.org. Include your image, a short description,and your name. Submissions must be received by midnight, April 15th.
NOTIFICATION: LAC will make the final selections and notify artists by May 1st. Each artist will receive copy of the finished publication, which will be available for sale at the Brambleton Library Arts Event on June 8. We look forward to seeing your submissions!

A LOVE Installation for Lovettsville

A LOVE Installation for Lovettsville!The Town of Lovettsville invites you to submit a proposal for the design and fabrication of a LOVEwork to be constructed in the town square. The LOVEworks program is an extension of the nearly 50-year-old “Virginia is for Lovers” brand, designed to promote travel and tourism throughout Virginia. Lovettsville’s LOVE sign will be added to a collection of more than 100 large-scale LOVEworks that are installed in towns and cities across the Commonwealth. These LOVEworks spark community pride, attract tourists, and spread the message that “Virginia is for Lovers.” Your design should aim to promote Lovettsville’s unique town character that may include things such as Oktoberfest, agriculture, etc. Your proposal should include an image of the design, a list of proposed materials and the estimated costs of the project.

Photography Contest

Photo Contest November 2018
Photo Club is hosting a photography contest throughout the month of November. The theme will be something you are thankful for, and this can be anything such as a friend, pet, etc. There are up to 5 submissions allowed per person, meaning you can submit this form up to 5 times. The maximum file size that can be submitted is 100MB, but if your file is larger than this, Mrs. Fisher can help you adjust it to the correct size, just send her an email:). 

Please submit your photo(s) here, and the winner will be announced at the end of the the month. Throughout the month, I will resend the form incase you lose it or need a reminder to upload. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Isabel Wood, Grace Chen, Bella Zhang or me!

Chimera: Foxcroft's Online Literature and Art Magazine - Rolling Submission

CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS!!
Do you have a poem, song, story, narrative essay, or piece of artwork you would like to submit to Chimera?  We would love to see/hear it!  Please use the submissions box in the library or e-mail them directly to Dr. O’Connor at lindsay.oconnor@foxcroft.org.  We use a blind submissions process, which means our editors have no idea who the author of the work is unless it is accepted.

ABOUT SCENIC VIRGINIA
Founded in 1998, Scenic Virginia is the only statewide conservation non-profit dedicated exclusively to the preservation, protection, and enhancement of the scenic beauty of our Commonwealth, with a particular focus on the preservation of significant views and vistas.
We believe that beauty is good for business and essential for the soul, and our scenic assets are essential to the cultural and economic health of our Commonwealth.

Instructions:
Please submit your photographs in .JPG format only (30 MB limit per image, an error message will occur if photos are over 30MB). We will request a higher resolution image if your photo is selected as a Winner or Honorable Mention.
ALSO, our rules require that you rename each photo file using the following format prior to uploading: Submission Category Code-Photo Name-Your Last Name, for example, if John Smith is entering "Foggy Morning on Skyline Drive" in the Mountains & Valleys category, the new file name would be "MV - Foggy Morning on Skyline Drive - Smith"

Nearby Nature Photo Contest

General Information
The NVCT Nearby Nature Photography Competition is open to all non-professional photographers. This contest promotes awareness of land conservation and the work of NVCT, a regional land trust committed to saving nearby nature, as well as the many public lands in our area.
Submitted photos must be taken within the Trust’s service area: Arlington, Caroline, Fairfax, Fauquier, King George, Loudoun, Prince William, Spotsylvania, and Stafford counties; and nearby independent cities including Alexandria, City of Fairfax, Falls Church, Fredericksburg, Manassas, and Manassas Park.
Photographers retain all rights to photographs submitted and agree to grant NVCT the right to publish the images with or without names. NVCT employees, members of the board of directors, and their immediate family members are not eligible to enter the contest.

Each photographer may submit up to four photographs but is eligible for only one contest award per year. Basic editing is allowed (such as filters, adjusting contrast, cropping and sharpening). Photographs must be submitted in digital format (jpg, png, gif, or tif). All identifiable persons in each photograph must sign the waiver section of the contest entry; parents or guardians must sign for subjects under 18. A panel of guest judges will review the submissions for creativity, content, composition, and originality, and award the top photographs by youth and adults in each category.

What is Zoohackathon?
The Zoohackathon is a computer coding and technology intensive event that brings together developers, designers, project managers, and subject matter experts to create applications, systems, and tools to help reduce demand for trafficked wildlife products.

The inaugural Zoohackathon was announced as a partnership by Under Secretary of State Catherine Novelli and Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Executive Director Kris Vehrs on World Wildlife Day 2016 and is a part of the U.S. National Strategy for Combating Wildlife Trafficking.

Piedmont Environmental Council- DEADLINE: 9/30/2017

PHOTO GUIDELINES
LOCATION
PEC connects people to the landscapes, communities and heritage of Virginia's Piedmont. As part of that mission, PEC is looking for images that enables people to experience this wonderful place in new and exciting ways. Photos must be taken within PEC’s nine-county region -- Albemarle, Clarke, Culpeper, Fauquier, Greene, Loudoun, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock.
CATEGORIES
  • Beautiful Landscapes and Streetscapes (including farmland)
  • Native Plants and Wildlife
  • Recreation (fishing, trails/hiking, farmers' markets, etc.)
  • Youth Category (for ages 17 and under)
    • All minors MUST have parent or guardian fill out the Youth Agreement form to be eligible for the PEC photo contest. See “How to Enter” below for instructions.
NUMBER OF ALLOWED SUBMISSIONS
  • Adults: you may enter up to 6 photos in each category (max of 18 photos)
  • Youth 17 years of age and younger: you may enter 6 photos in the Youth Category (max of 6 photos)
IMAGE SIZE
​Preferred size of photographs is 1 MB or larger at 72 DPI or more. You may submit smaller sized images, but images with a low resolution are less likely to be considered as finalists.
CAPTION ALL PHOTOGRAPHS
Photo captions must accompany all submissions, and should include a description of:
  • Description of the subject in the image,
  • The location of where the image was taken,
  • The name of the photographer.
HOW TO ENTER
  • 1To submit your photos via Flickr™, use your Yahoo!® ID to login to www.flickr.com. If you do not have an account, you can sign-up for free. It's easy!
  • 2After logging in, join the Piedmont Environmental Council group on Flickr™ by  visiting our group page and clicking on "Join this Group".
  • 3After joining our group, you can begin to upload your photos. To do so, click on the "Upload" icon (looks like a cloud with an arrow pointing up) on the menu at the very top, right of the page. Next, click on the large blue box that says "Choose Photos and Videos," and select the photos from the files that you wish to upload to Flickr. When your photos appear as thumbnails, you can click each photo (highlighting it in pink) and assign the appropriate TAGS and send the images to the Piedmont Environmental Council GROUP (see next step for tagging and groups assignment instructions).
  • 4Click “ADD TAGS” in the left sidebar, then type the title of the Category you wish to submit your photo to (be sure to use the quotation marks, or the tag will not work properly):
    Category Topics:
    • "Landscapes PEC 2017"
    • "Plants and Wildlife PEC 2017"
    • "Recreation PEC 2017"
    • "Youth PEC 2017"
  • 5To add a description, click "ADD A DESCRIPTION" (in the left sidebar still) and provide
    1. the subject of the photo,
    2. the photo location, and
    3. the photographer's name.
  • 6 Then, Click “ADD TO GROUPS” and select the “Piedmont Environmental Council” group, then click done.
  • 7Once your photos have been tagged and selected to go into PEC's Flickr group, you must click the blue "Upload photo" button at the top right corner of the page.
  • 8Participants 17 years of age or younger and her/his parent or guardian MUST complete the Youth Agreement form for their submissions to be considered for judging.

National Young Arts Foundation - DEADLINE: 10/13/17

Photography portfolios demonstrate a mastery of the ability to take risks, develop an idea through a series of images, showcase a range of experimentation, and clearly articulate visual and conceptual ideas.

What is National YoungArts Week?National YoungArts Week is our signature program where approximately 170 Finalists across ten disciplines convene in Miami each January for an intensive, life changing week of performance and study. During this week, Finalists have the opportunity to work with the National Selection Panel in person; take master classes with some of the most accomplished artists working in the field; meet one another; and exhibit/perform their work for the public. Learn more.

​What is a YoungArts Regional Program and where are they located?

Inspired by the transformative experiences offered during National YoungArts Week, Regional programs are designed to offer the YoungArts experience to as many winners as possible from an ever-growing list of locations. Presently, our regional programs are YoungArts Miami, YoungArts New York, and YoungArts Los Angeles. Winners receive detailed information about these programs in their award notification email.
